It's an enjoyable loveletter to that era, but doesn't really offer much new. There's a slippery ice level, a windy section, upwards autoscrolls, sideways autoscrolls, sinewave enemies, etc. The chiptune soundtrack bops and it kind of melds a lot of the "greatest hits" of NES era action platforming mechanics. The weird 2D in a 3D environment is quite horrendous looking, and most of the pixel art is average at best, but none of that holds the game back. Awakened Evil is a bootleg ass Castlevania, and I enjoyed my brief time with it. I love the original Castlevania and play through it regularly. It's pretty slight as well, and areas seem to be drawn out and a tad bit longer than most metroidvanias, covering up the lack of boss encounters and other secrets. I like some of the pixel art, and dislike about an equal amount. It's really into its narrative and worldbuilding, but I don't think any of it is particularly remarkable in either direction. I'm curious to see how the devs do with their next game, Ravenswatch, which funnily enough will compete with Hades II in early access later this year.Įlderand is a pretty standard and for the most part a competently made Symphony of the Night styled metroidvania. Its curse system and general run progression make for one of the most interesting roguelike dynamics out there. Hades is a special game in large part due to its writing, and while some people prefer more spam heavy ARPG combat that Hades also offers, I find myself preferring the more methodical combat of Curse of the Dead Gods. This game has a rep as a bootleg Hades, but how it feels to play is so different from Hades that while the comparison is logical, it's kind of unfortunate. I finally came back to it, and while it's still very difficult it wasn't as difficult as I remember it being. I got through most of Curse of the Dead Gods at the time of its release, but hit a wall with the hard sections. Web weaving and solving the games many physics based puzzles is simply laid back fun. Web slinging here is just as satisfying as it is in any Spider-Man game. On the whole it's just a pretty middling metroidvania. If you're stuck, it's hard to figure out where you need to go because you can't use the map if you haven't found the jammer. The maps of given areas are jammed until you find a jammer and destroy it. The pacing and progression is also kind of whack. Enemy and boss design aren't terribly exciting. The game is trying to be moody and atmospheric like Hollow Knight, but beyond the soundtrack being that way, the game does little to earn the players respect of its atmosphere. The game is pleasant to look at, and the gameplay feels good. Haiku, the Robot seems to be chasing the Hollow Knight trends without really bringing anything new or exciting to the table. If Hollow Knight is an epic poem, Haiku, is a haiku. Indies seem to be finding that meat though, as Pizza Tower seems to be making waves and Antonblast looks like a blast. Even so it feels like a lot of meat was left on the bone. I've now played them all, and Wario Land is probably the best of them. ![]() Wario Land games are great platformers on a conceptual level, but are too restricted by their handheld homes to really feel like they've been executed to their maximum potential. This is the actual first game to do the Final Fantasy VII twist though, so I suppose that counts for something. Due to this one being on the Genesis, it is a lot better looking game, and a case can be made for the sci-fi setting being superior, the writing certainly is, but I think I preferred my time with Final Fantasy on the whole more. I played the original Final Fantasy last month and got the same sort of feeling. That said old JRPGs like this one are painfully grindy and slow going. I lost a good 8 hours of grindy progress I made during a trip, only to come back and have it all wiped away for me to start from the beginning. This is the game that will stop me from ever playing something on Steam Deck again. Considering when it was released however, there are some really cool level design ideas sprinkled throughout, and it is a pretty gnarly take on the Alice in Wonderland mythos. It's a pretty decent 3D platformer, but the controls don't hold up as well as your Marios and Banjos of the world. ![]() Gameplay wise it also probably isn't going to impress too many people either. Graphically these days it still holds up fine, but certainly isn't going to impress anyone. ![]() I caught a glimpse of this game at a friends house growing up and was one of a few games that blew me away with its graphics.
